Prisvinnande homeopati i världen

Speech by Prof. George Vithoulkas at the Swedish Parliament during the presentation of the Right Livelihood Awards

Madame Speaker, Your Excellencies, ladies and gentlemen, friends,

I would like to thank the Right Livelihood Award Committee for honouring me with such a great distinction. In doing so, they have primarily honoured Classical Homeopathy itself, as well as all my students who have worked with such enthusiasm and dedication towards the proper application and teaching of this therapeutic system.

When I started practising homeopathy 36 years ago in South Africa, and after having treated successfully – to my great surprise – quite a number of chronically ill patients, I decided to find out where one could receive formal training in such an effective therapeutic method. To my utter amazement, frustration and disappointment, I found out that this subject was not taught in any European or American Medical School, and only the rudiments were being taught in India and Mexico.

Not only that, but I soon learned that in the whole of the western world, homeopathy remained entirely on the fringe, hidden from the public eye, so that most suffering people were oblivious of its existence and its possible therapeutic benefits.

Having witnessed its therapeutic effects in more than 150,000 cases in these 36 years of practice, I felt, that the fact that it was so much ignored by our societies was an almost inexplicable peculiarity of nature rather than human neglect.

Homeopathy’s main rule – ”similia similibus curentur”, or ”like is cured by like” – had already been mentioned by Hippocrates. But it was at the beginning of the 19th century that it was organised as a therapeutic methodology by the German doctor Christian Samuel Hahnemann. When I first heard of homeopathy in 1960, this important therapeutic modality had remained in the same state that Hahnemann had left it 150 years before.

In 1963 I had already vowed, promised myself, to work to the best of my abilities to develop it to the full and to give it back to the world to stand on its true merit. I took up this task because I realised by that time, that nobody else was willing to do the work. Most probably because no one perceived its real value in helping humanity. Since then I have devoted all my time and energy to the task of reviving classical homeopathy as it was taught by Samuel Hahnemann, upgrading it to the level of a science and giving it back to the world with the proof that it works. To this day, I think that I have not retreated, nor faltered, from this task.

After some years of practice, and having the experience of treating thousands of cases, I started investigating and researching all these cases, all these human medical tragedies, that had come to my attention seeking help, and I tried to give answers to a lot of perplexing questions. Since then I have written several books that I believe have clarified many issues that had remained unresolved in homeopathy and answered many of those questions.

This untiring research and investigation led to the structuring of a new theoretical model that gives an altogether new direction and dimension to medical thinking. I think that for the first time the rules have been determined for an ”energy” medicine, the subtle force that is behind all medical phenomena in living organisms.

I have stipulated the laws and principles that govern Health and Disease, that govern any therapeutic system actually, so that the therapist may know whether under a specific treatment the patient is improving or actually degenerating.

According to this model, the world, and conventional medicine in particular, has been moving in the wrong direction in therapeutics. I understand that it sounds strange – even arbitrary, pretentious or superficial – that such a strong criticism of conventional therapeutics should come from someone who has not had conventional medical training. Yet facts are stronger than prejudices, and when the issues are so important and urgent, perhaps the medical authorities will have to listen to someone who has experience in treating more than one hundred thousand cases, cases that were not only given up on by conventional medicine but had often been a result of it. I claim that diseases of the human race have never been tackled properly by conventional medicine; on the contrary, they have been treated wrongly – suppressively – and therefore while the symptoms were masked, the real disorder underneath progressed and finally was pushed to the interior of the organism, which is the central and peripheral nervous system.

Let me give you just a few facts to judge for yourself.

Multiple sclerosis, a disease that eventually leaves its victims totally paralysed, is one which thousands of people are suffering from in the western world. Yet it is entirely unknown to Africans, Asians or South Americans, who have not had the ”benefit” of the excellency of western medicine. Amyatrophic lateral sclerosis, a terrible disorder of the neuromuscular systems, is also unknown to all these people.

Myopathy and muscular dystrophy is the same, known only to westerners. Epilepsy, which is rampant in the western world, is seldom encountered in these countries.

Anxiety neurosis, compulsive neurosis, and in general mental disorders of a severe nature from which millions of patients are suffering in the western world, are almost unknown in these groups that have not had the ”benefit” of modern medicine and vaccinations. Chorea and a host of other nervous system disorders are also unknown to them.

The model suggests that all these chronic diseases, including hay fever, asthma, cancer and AIDS, are the result of wrong intervention upon the organisms by conventional medicine. It claims that the immune systems of the western population, through strong chemical drugs and repeated vaccinations, have broken down and finally admitted the diseases deeper and deeper into the human organism, to the central and peripheral nervous system.

In short, this model claims that conventional medicine, instead of curing diseases, is actually the cause of the degeneration of the human race. It is also very simple for anyone to think that if conventional medicine were really curing chronic diseases, today we would have a population in the west that was healthy, mentally, emotionally and physically.

Due to this model, I had already, in 1970, predicted the appearance of AIDS, saying to a group of medical doctors in Athens that if conventional medicine continued to use antibiotics the way it did, there would come a time when the immune system would break down and new incurable diseases would emerge. It was an unfortunate but precise and timely prediction of the appearance of AIDS.

Today, I want to make another prediction. If conventional medicine does not take notice of what we say and drastically change its practices and its logic in treating with chemical drugs; if it does not also change the direction of its research, soon diseases will go to the very centre of the organism, which is the nervous system, and most of the population on earth will be mentally ill individuals.

5

I do not expect that this theoretical model will be understood or appreciated soon by the medical authorities, but I think that from now on there is no excuse for ignoring the so-called side effects that conventional therapies have inflicted and are still inflicting on the human race.

The full explanation of what I am claiming here has been published in a thesis of mine with the title a ”New Model for Health and Disease” or a ”New Dimension in Medicine”.

I am really glad and deeply thankful to the Right Livelihood Award Committee for giving me the opportunity to express my word of warning to the world, and I would be more than happy if, due to this warning, the suffering of human beings is considerably lessened.

I would now like to present some of the landmarks in my work.

At the moment, I am writing a homeopathic pharmacology, a Materia Medica as it is called, of which I have completed eight volumes. There are another eight volumes in preparation.

For the last 30 years I have taught classical homeopathy to medical doctors and health practitioners and have converted to classical Hahnemannian homeopathy thousands of medical doctors and health practitioners, primarily from Europe and the United States.

I have helped and encouraged my students to establish several teaching centres for classical homeopathy all over the world in order to teach other interested practitioners.

In co-operation with Namur University of Belgium, I have developed an expert computer system that imitates my thinking in the analysis of difficult cases. This computer system is helping homeopathic practitioners in solving difficult and complicated cases.

I saw a long-time vision come true in 1995 when I established the International Academy for Classical Homeopathy on the island of Alonissos in the Aegean Sea. In this institution I aspire to teach, from A to Z, all the material that I have taught in the last 20 years in different courses all over the world. Already I have started teaching an international group, a group of Russian doctors as well as a group of Italian doctors.

It is a truly satisfying experience for me to see that 2,500 years after Hippocrates, medical doctors are coming back to a Greek island to be taught what I am convinced to be today the most advanced form of therapy.

I would like to give you now some personal background.

I was born in Athens in 1932. During the second world war I lost eight members of my family, including both my parents. I had to work hard from the age of 11, firstly in order to survive and then in order to study.

Since that time I seem to have learned to think for myself and to solve problems without asking for help from others. In any case, during those difficult war years, nobody could afford to offer help. Another event in my life that marked my later development was that as a result of malnutrition suffered in the terrible famine in wartime Athens, I developed a serious spinal condition at the age of sixteen.

I lived in pain for 12 years, refusing to take the orthodox treatment that was proposed in 1948, as the doctors told me that there was a strong possibility of paralysis if surgery was performed. I lived in that condition, still working hard to support myself and my studies, as well as to support my sister, until I came into contact with homeopathy in 1960.

6

My first reading of a book on homeopathy was a revelation. I studied everything that was available. I attended various homeopathic colleges but was totally disappointed with the low standards of teaching. I felt that homeopathy deserved a better kind of teaching, a better way of presentation, but most of all better results than those the practitioners of the time were able to present. In order to do that, I felt that I had to solve for myself the thousand questions that were plaguing my mind concerning homeopathy and its presentation to the world as a serious therapeutic modality.

I learned a lot from looking upon human suffering in all these tens of thousands of cases, and I can say that out of sympathy I experienced pain in all its manifestations and at all its levels through my patients. I felt when I was examining them what it means to suffer mentally, emotionally, as well as physically. The urge to help and the idea that this could be done through homeopathy inspired my efforts during those early days and gave me some hope in my nights of agony.

I learned from such painful experiences that real health is a primary and basic ”possession” that in fact very few people possessed in the western world. I came to the conclusion that health can be defined best by the word freedom: freedom from pain on the physical level, having a feeling of well-being; freedom from passion on the emotional level, having a feeling of dynamic serenity and calmness; freedom from selfishness on the mental-spiritual level, the individual having a connection with Truth or with God.

I saw how many people not only lacked such a perfect state of health but often lived in fear, agony, panic, depression, in mental confusion or mental aberration. All of them had to take chemical drugs in order to be barely functional.

Yet I feel the despair of the person whose cries fall on deaf ears. Conventional medicine strongly resists the information that comes from us, does not even want to hear about it, does not even want to begin a dialogue and profit by it. We have the recent example of the Swedish Medical Association’s negative reaction to my being awarded this Prize.

However, if one perceives the total insignificance and shortness of our lives on this planet and on the other hand the eternity of the cosmos and its eternal evolution, the controversies and confrontations that spring from selfish interests and personal greed or insecurities have no place at all in our efforts and endeavours to help ailing humanity.

As the greatest resistance to homeopathy – which is the cheapest way of curing diseases – comes from the pharmaceutical industry, I would propose that pharmaceutical companies by international law should not be allowed to earn profits from their sales. Only then, I think, may there be hope for change.

If the world’s medical authorities still choose to ignore Hahnemann’s beneficial discoveries, not only will they miss a tremendous opportunity to introduce a health system that could promote better health, and therefore a more harmonious and more peaceful life on the planet, but they will also be accused by succeeding generations of criminal negligence and short sightedness.

I believe that humanity has an uphill battle to wage in its fight to attain real health, and I honestly believe – from hard-earned experience – that homeopathy can offer some solution to this problem.

I feel that I have totally exhausted myself in these 36 years of uncompromising efforts to prove the validity of such a wonderful therapeutic system and I was ready to give up the unequal struggle. But if this award makes a difference to the so far deaf ears of the medical authorities, then I could say, like Hahnemann, non inutilis vixi – I did not live in vain.

Sarah Whittaker wins national award

Sarah Whittaker, founder and managing director of Phoenix Homeopathy, has beaten health practitioners nationwide to win a UK national Complementary & Alternative Medicine (CAM) Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Community. She collected her award and her £1,000 prize at The Metropole, Brighton on 11 March 2007.

Sarah impressed the judges with her support for students, trainees and local homeopaths. She was awarded first prize in the Outstanding Contribution to the Community category for her work in three key areas:

  • The Phoenix Student Sponsorship Scheme: where income from the Phoenix clinic contributed towards the expensive tuition fees of deserving local trainee homeopaths for the four-year Licentiate training course at local homeopathy colleges.
  • The Phoenix Internship Scheme: a scheme through which Sarah helped final year and newly qualified homeopaths develop their skills and build their practices.
  • Founding and running the BrightHom homeopathic network, a local non-profit making support network for Sussex homeopaths, helping to take care of those who work tirelessly to help others.Commenting on her achievement, Sarah said:

“The CAM Awards are highly respected in the industry. Last year, we were thrilled to be highly commended for the Outstanding Practice category, making us one of the top three natural health practices nationwide. This year, my team and I are delighted to have won an award. Fostering links with local homeopaths and investing time and money in training future homeopaths is key to developing our industry in a professional manner. It’s great to be recognised for our hard work and ground breaking initiatives in this area.”

10

Helhetssyn viktig

* Det finns 23.000 apotek i Frankrike. Alla har homeopatiska läkemedel.

* 18.000 läkare i Frankrike, dvs 32 procent förskriver företrädesvis homeopatiska medel till sina patienter.

* 700 veterinärer (10%) och 2.000 tandläkare (5%) ger homeopatiska behandlingar.

* Medelpriset för ett homeopatiskt läkemedel var (från tillverkaren 8 kronor) och för läkemedel (25 kronor). Sannolikt blir de ekonomiska kalkylerna liknande i övriga Europa, möjligen något högre i Tyskland. En stark kontrast till den svenska verkligheten!

11

Nyare forskning styrker teser

Deltagande politiker: Lena-Maj Anding (mp), Olof Pontusson (s), Amineh Kakabaveh (v), Christer Grunder (m), Christina Berlin (fp). Deltagande tjänstemän från BKV: Inga Hellsvik, Kerstin Kindert. Övriga: Inger Hallqvist Lindvall, politisk sekreterare (mp).

Danmark

13

I VIFAB ́s styrelse ingår 11 personer

CAM research

Different research situation – same basic research methods

Vinjar Fønnebø
National Research Center in Complementary and Alternative Medicine Universitetet i Tromsø

What do we know ”works” in clinical practice?

_ Many treatment techniques in established medicine have a documented effect _ Few treatment techniques in CAM have a documented effect

What do we think ”works” in clinical practice?

_ Non-specific treatment techniques have a considerable effect in a number of conditions or in many sick individuals
_ Treatment effects of CAM might be caused by these non-specific treatment techniques or a combination of non-specific and specific techniques

_ Our beliefs are not strong enough to retain the non-specific techniques in many areas of established medicine

Four main domains of health research

_ Why is something wrong?
_ What is wrong?
_ How does the wrong express itself? _ How can the wrong be righted?

Why is something wrong?

_ Little conflict between established medicine and CAM
_ All illness/disease arises as a distortion in the homeodynamic balance

18

NAFKAM – www.nafkam.no

What is wrong?

_ Little conflict between established medicine and CAM, but: Established medicine

_ Most emphasis on ”objectively” measurable variables

CAM

_ Emphasis more equally distributed between ”objectively” measurable variables and relational variables

How does the wrong express itself?

_ Fundamental difference in some areas:

Established medicine

_ As a person with an illness/disease
_ Diseases are more similar than the individuals who have them

CAM

_ As an ill person
_ Individuals are more similar than the diseases who have them

How can the wrong be righted?

_ Fundamental difference in some areas:

Established medicine

_ Combat the disease-specific causative factors, thereby enabling the defensive systems to regain the homeodynamic ”optimal” status
_ In general standardize the treatment according to the diagnosis, with some adjustment for the individual

CAM

_ Support the defensive systems on a broad front, thereby enabling them to combat the disease-specific causative factors, and thereby regaining the homeodynamic ”optimal” status
_ In general standardize the treatment mainly according to the person, with some adjustment for the diagnosis

19

NAFKAM – www.nafkam.no

Consequences for research

_ Established medicine is looking for research pertaining to treatment according to diagnosis

_ They conclude: CAM does not work
_ CAM is looking for research pertaining to the person

_ They conclude: CAM has not been researched properly

Consequences for research

_The patients are trapped in the middle:
_ They, in general, trust the researchers, but experience a different result on their

own body.
_ They include the nonspecific treatments in their evaluation of the treatment they

receive

Recent Lancet study on homeopathy

”We emphasise that our study, and the trials we examined, exclusively addressed the narrow question of whether homoeopathic
remedies have specific effects. Context effects can influence the effects of interventions, and the relationship between patient and carer might be an important pathway mediating such effects. Practitioners of homoeopathy can form powerful alliances with their patients, because patients and carers commonly share strong beliefs about the treatment’s effectiveness, and other cultural beliefs, which might be both empowering and restorative. For some people, therefore, homoeopathy could be another tool that complements conventional medicine, whereas

others might see it as purposeful and antiscientific deception of patients, which has no place in modern health care. Clearly, rather than doing further placebocontrolled trials of homoeopathy, future research efforts should focus on the nature of context effects and on the place of

homoeopathy in health-care systems.” Shang et al 2005

Clinical research

Established medicine

_ Takes for granted that the ”system” approach is effective Challenged constantly by ”new” diseases and conditions

_ Research is mainly occupied with finetuning of clinical techniques and approaches Conrolled trials are often the most appropriate method
Satisfaction research is also important

Clinical research

CAM

_ Does not take for granted that the ”system” or any of its techniques are effective Challenged constantly by ”new” diseases and conditions

_ Research needs to both evaluate the system as such and its treatment components Conrolled trials are important, but should be done on both the system as such and its treatment components
Satisfaction research is also important

ECHAMP NEWS
Brussels November 2007
European Coalition on Homeopathic & Anthroposophic Medicinal Products

Focus on the Nordic countries

This issue of ECHAMP News brings you information on two main topics. Firstly, the issue gives a special focus on the the situation of complementary medicine (CAM) in the five Nordic countries – Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland and Iceland. In October, a delegation from ECHAMP was warmly welcomed in Stockholm for a ‘Nordic visit’. The ECHAMP team participated in a number of meetings with epresentatives from all the Nordic countries, meeting the most important Nordic stakeholders from industry, as well as practitioners and doctors. It also had the chance to meet decision makers of the Swedish Health ministry, the Swedish parliament and the Swedish medicines agency.

A second major topic in this issue of ECHAMP News is the integration of mainstream and complementary
medicine. You will find articles on two such new initiatives: ‘Thinking out of the box’ is the original slogan of the integration movement in the Netherlands, while pluralism in medicine and the benefit for patients

were the focus of discussions at the first European Dialogue Forum in Brussels.

I hope you enjoy reading this last issue of ECHAMP News of 2007. Nand De Herdt

Scientific Report – ECH

(European Committee for Homeopathy, www.homeopatheurope.org)

ECH GENERAL ASSEMBLY – XVIII Symposium of GIRI 12 to 14th of November 2004

Evidence profile for the efficacy of homeopathy – A new paradigm for medical sciences: “The Body Information Theory”.

• Firstquestionaddressed:Theactivityofveryhighlydilutedpreparations.

Homeopathic practitioners will argue that the use of preparations that are diluted beyond Avogadro’s number (i.e. potencies greater than C10) happens in only 25% of the prescribed homeopathic medications. Nevertheless, for some people this question is the most important obstacle to the acceptance of homeopathy.

A/ The experimental model that is cheapest, most reproducible and also the most easily researched is probably the “acetylcholine-induced contraction of the rat ileum”. It is a wellrecognized scientific model (Chang FY, Lee SD, et al. Rat gastrointestinal motor responses mediated via activation of neurokinin receptors. J.Gastroenterol Hepatol 1999; 14: 39-45). This model has been devised for the verification of very high dilutions of Belladonna by A. Cristea, a Romanian researcher; results have already been published (Bastide M (ed). Signals and Images. Kluwer Academic Publishers 1997: 161-170).

Professor Wolfgang Süß, Institute of Pharmacy at the University of Leipzig, has used this model to test the transfer of the activity of a homeopathic remedy (in this case Atropinum sulphuricum D60) from the original liquid form to the homeopathic tablet. As usual, several controls were performed. Alpha-lactose monohydrate tablets impregnated with the highly diluted Atropinum had systematically efficacy, on the contrary with anhydrous alpha-lactose tablets no effect can be ascertained. Thus, the quality of homeopathic tablets can be tested before daily use in pharmacy (constant reproducibility). This very simple model therefore has the potential to remove doubts about the activity of very highly diluted homeopathic remedies (Schmidt F, Süß WG, Nieber K. In-vitro Testung von homöopathischen Verdünnungen. Biol. Med./Heft 1/February 2004;32-37).

B/ It has taken much more time for another model to be accepted by the scientific community. The first publications appeared in 1991 but it is only in 2004, after an international cooperation, that the results have finally been accepted in a high-standard peer-reviewed journal, Inflammation Research. This model is different from the Benveniste model; he used the same control but not the same activator.

Professors Marcel Roberfroid and Jean Cumps of the Institute of Pharmacy at the University of Louvain, who respectively coordinated the European multi-centre (4 centres) trial and performed the statistical analysis, explained the protocols and discussed the results. The work demonstrates a significant inhibition of human basophil degranulation, as measured by alcian blue staining, by high dilutions of histamine (10-30 – 10-38 M). This multi-centre research has subsequently been confirmed in three laboratories by applying flow cytometry analysis and in one laboratory by measuring histamine release. Even if, at present, the molecular theory cannot explain these findings, the facts remain indisputable as recognized by the editor of Inflammation Research. (Belon P, Cumps J, Ennis M, Mannaioni PF, Roberfroid M, Sainte- Laudy J, Wiegant FAC. Histamine dilutions modulate basophil activation. Inflamm. Res. 2004; 53: 181-188.)

C/ Research on high dilutions has existed since the 1950s, but the number and quality of publications has increased in the last decade. Reviews and meta-analyses have even been

23

performed but often ignored or even denied (see COST B4 supplement report EUR 19110 ISBN 92-828-7434-6). This research is not encouraged and even deemed inadvisable by academic authorities.
Professor Jean Cambar, Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Bordeaux, described the most important models that have been published previously in international journals, confirming the effects of very highly diluted homeopathic preparations.

The efficacy of very high homeopathic dilutions of human or animal natural molecules (also called endogen molecules) has been published several times in prestigious journals. Examples include the following: Int J Immunotherapy 1987; 3: 191-200 (Thymulin in mice. Bastide M); Int J Immunopharm 1990; 6: 211-214 (alpha/beta interferon, Carriere V); J Vet Human Toxicol 1995; 37(3): 259-260 (Thyroxine, Endler PC); Int J Immunopathol Pharmacol 1996; 9: 43-51 (Bursin, Youbicier-Simo BL). During this meeting Dimitris Zienkiewicz, immunologist at the University of Edinburgh, presented preliminary findings assessing, by immunosorbent assay and flow cytometry, the alteration in activation and function of dendritic cells that comes about as a result of their treatment with homeopathic dilutions of a bacterium. Dendritic cells play an instrumental role in both activation and regulation of the immune system. Systematic changes in the profile of cytokines IL-10, IL-11 and IL-12 cannot be explained by the molecular theory.

Efficacy of very high homeopathic dilutions using pharmacological models has also been published in peer-reviewed journals. Examples include the following: Thrombosis. Res. 1994; 76: 225-229 (Acetylsalicylic acid in a vessel model. Doutremepuich C); Haemostasis 1990; 20: 99-105 (Acetylsalicylic acid in healthy volunteers. Doutremepuich C); Thrombosis. Res. 1987; 48: 501-504 (Acetylsalicylic acid in healthy volunteers, Doutremepuich C).

The longest-used model, published frequently all over the world, is the toxicological model (Arsenic, Phosphorus, Mercury, Cadmium, Cisplatina, Glutamate, Cuprum sulphate, etc). It can be applied to vegetable, animal, cell culture material or even clinical studies. This model is still used and indeed is the theme for a collaboration between the Universities of Bern and Bologna, testing homeopathic arsenic trioxide treatments by plant-based bioassays. The working variables are the germinated seeds or the stem length on the seventh day. At least 6 recent experiments by this team are published (Dr Lucietta Betti. DISTA-Department of Agro environmental Science and Technology, University of Bologna.).

Experiments are well conducted, in controlled conditions, with a sufficient number of plants, animals or cells, and with a fair statistical treatment. The facts are indisputable, statistically significant and reproducible, even if they cannot be explained using the molecular paradigm.

24

• Secondquestionaddressed:Thecontentofveryhighlydilutedhomeopathicpreparations.

Professor Jean Cambar introduced the theme by asking what are the contributions of the different spectroscopies (Raman, Ultraviolet, X-ray or Magnetic Nuclear Resonance) in revealing the structure of water and solvents in high dilutions? What is the real relevance of Avogadro’s number in evaluating the precise pattern of molecules? Can a dilution work without any molecule? One of the most innovative perspectives in this last decade was the demonstration that high dilutions have as much activity and effectiveness in an organized structured solvent without any solute molecule as they do when molecules are present (even only some molecules).

Professor Louis Rey, Doctor of Sciences, Lausanne, a specialist in low temperature thermoluminescence, has published on this topic in the international journals Nature (1988; 391: 418) and C.R.Physique (2000; 1: 107-110). He presented the latest results of the experiments he carried out together with Dr. Philippe Belon on the thermoluminescence of ultra-high dilutions of lithium chloride and sodium chloride. Ultra-high dilutions of lithium chloride and sodium chloride (10-30 g cm-3) were irradiated by X- and gamma-rays at 77K, then progressively re-warmed to room temperature. During that phase, their thermoluminescence was studied and it was found that, despite their dilution beyond the Avogadro number, the emitted light was specific of the original salts dissolved initially. Much to the authors’ surprise, the experimental results showed, without ambiguity, the specificity of the contained information. The findings proved to be reproducible in the course of many different identical experiments. As a working hypothesis, the researchers propose that this phenomenon results from a marked structural change in the hydrogen bond network initiated at the onset by the presence of the dissolved ions and maintained in the course of the dilution process, and probably due to the successive vigorous mechanical stirrings. (Physica 2003; A323: 67-74).
Professor Guadalupe Ruiz-Vega, Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo, Morelia, Mexico, presented her most recent publications in the field of thermodynamics. She was able to demonstrate the biological effect of two ultra-low dose compounds. (Publication in process.)

The use of modern techniques in the hands of specialists is the best way to show sceptics that the experimental facts are well grounded and confirmed by reproducible experiments. Even in ultra-molecular homeopathic dilutions, specific information of the prime dissolved substance still remains in the preparation and can be detected experimentally.

• Thirdquestionaddressed:Thetheoreticalframeworkinwhichtheeffectsof homeopathic diluted preparations can be explained.

Two members of G.I.R.I. (Groupe International de Recherche sur l’Infinitésimal; see www.giriweb.com), Professor Madeleine Bastide (University of Montpellier) and Agnès Lagache (Professor of Philosophy, Paris) have been working on this topic for 16 years. A new paradigm for medical science is needed to explain these facts and to allow more precise research models in the future. A working group of 7 members applied this new paradigm to the analysis of experimental results.

“When the observed fact does not correspond to a famous theory, the fact has to be accepted and the theory rejected”; “A theory must be modified to be adapted to nature and not nature to adapt itself to the theory”.
Claude Bernard (Introduction à la Médecine Expérimentale).

Prof. Bastide explained that homeopathy and research models are based on the observation of “symptoms”. Asymptomatic pathologies exist that provoke “biological scars” as a proof of the self-treated organism without showing the illness symptoms (Charles Nicolle, Nobel Prize 1929, Life and Death of Illness). Symptoms and biological modifications are not the same and concern different levels in the body. The symptom may be an expression of the body when it cannot find any answer whatever the situation (infection, stress, strong emotion…).

Example: Rubella in a normal subject: no apparent sickness. Rubella in immuno-deficient subject: symptoms, apparent sickness.
For the allopathic research approach, the symptoms are pathognomonic, specific to the illness; they are used to diagnose the pathology. When the diagnosis of the pathology is performed, the treatment is chosen accordingly; classical therapy may be also targeted against symptoms. For the homeopathic research approach, considered symptoms are idiosyncratic; specific to the patient. They are the personal expression of the sickness by the patient. They are used to choose the specific remedy according to the similarity of the symptoms observed by “proving” in a healthy subject. The living body is in a lasting and irreversible learning process; it communicates at every level with its environment. It is able to receive and treat semantic and corporeal information; it is not an inert object.

The paradigm of corporeal signifiers (Bastide M., Lagache A. Revue Intern. Systémique 1995; 9: 237-249 and Altern Ther Health Med. 1997; 3: 35-9).
Three principles define homeopathy, based on clinical and experimental analysis: the similia and whole person principles, and the use of very high dilutions. The effects of high dilutions cannot be explained by a simple molecule-receptor interaction (mechanistic paradigm), the “well established theory” of modern science. Prof. Bastide & Lagache propose an epistemological approach to homeopathy based on body information processes received and interpreted by the living organism; this follows the rules of information exchange. Exchange of objects between a giver and a receiver is very simple: one loses, the other gains, and the sum is constant. On the other hand, information is not an object but the trace of an object – mediation between object and receiver is required for a signal to be transmitted. For example, take the story of Robinson Crusoe: Crusoe sees Friday’s footprint in the sand but not the foot itself. For him, this footprint means ‘there is another man on this island’. Friday’s foot is the originator (matrix) of the information; the footprint is information but is not an object; the sand is the carrier of the information (the mediator). When the carrier disappears, the information disappears too. The information is understood only by the receiver and the understanding of the information depends on its context – he knows that he is alone on the island. Prof. Bastide & Lagache therefore suggest that in homeopathy, the originator of the information is the starting material of the remedy; succussed dilutions of the starting material in a solvent are mediators. High dilutions contain only information from that material and no

26

molecules remain. This mediation results from the succussed solvent being in a specific state, implying perhaps electro-magnetic processes. The receiver (the whole living body) receives and processes the information in the remedy according to its state, whether healthy (“proving”) or sick (therapy). The bases of this paradigm are verified by the systematic experimental results obtained as described in the first parts of the conference.

This new paradigm is needed to explain the experimental facts and to understand the failure of research models that do not fit it.

• Thefinalquestionaddressed:Theclinicaleffectsofhomeopathicpreparations.

An experimental design is only relevant if it takes into account the observed phenomenon
within its specific framework and if the subject addressed can be isolated of all external influences. Considering human medicine, the psychological factors are responsible for nonspecific effects and the medication effects are called specific effects. Whatever the research

model, taking into account the homeopathic approach, the idiosyncratic symptoms (specific to the patient) must be considered excluding pathognomonic symptoms.
A/ Professor Leoni Bonamin, Paulista University (São Paulo) and president of G.I.R.I., reviewed studies in veterinary homeopathy. Such studies are relevant for homeopathy because it is easier to isolate the effects of the treatment: the placebo effect is almost nil and there are fewer ethical considerations. Moreover, studies in well-defined herds and features can include a very homogeneous sample from a large number of animals. Nevertheless, the rules for well-designed studies must still consider the particularities of homeopathic research as regards the Similia principle (considering idiosyncratic symptoms).

Veterinary studies are very important for organic farming regulation. In Europe, only homeopathic treatments are authorized for biological farming. The use of homeopathy is aimed at avoiding chemical residues in the food chain. More institutional support is certainly needed.
In recent studies, the use of homeopathic complexes has been tested with very good results using parallel placebo groups, blinded design, homogeneity of samples with sufficient animals, and a protocol that is easy to manage in the farming context.
Annals of the “Entretiens Internationaux de Monaco 2002”, 5-6 October 2002. http://www.giriweb.com. The use of homeopathic complex reduced the incidence of haematomas in turkeys during transportation by about 30%.
Riaucourt A. L ́Exemple de la Filière Porcine. Annals of the “Entretiens Internationaux de Monaco 2002”, 5-6 October, 2002. http://www.giriweb.com. The use of a complex (with endogenous and exogenous substances) to improve oestrus manifestation in female pigs induced a reduction of the repetitions of inseminations and semen loss.
Veterinary studies are also useful for questioning homeopathic study design. Using the model of psychogenic dermatosis in dogs and cats (Torro, et al. In press), six months of treatment with the simillimum shows 70% success. One year after finishing the treatment there was no recurrence. The entire study duration is six years. The very long efficacy of the homeopathic treatment is a reason for questioning cross-over design.
Because veterinary pathogenetic studies are very rare, veterinarians often need to do extrapolations from human pathogenesis and their Materia medica is based on classical studies performed in humans.

Research protocols in experimental animals. For example, the effects of nosode (isopathic homeopathic remedy) versus allopathy and similar homeopathic remedy using as model the experimental urinary infection of rats (Gonçalves et al. O uso da homeopatia no tratamento da infecção urinária em ratas. Anais do VIII SINAPIH; 20-22 May, 2004: p.25-26.

27

http//climed.epm.br/sinapih/index). This study compares nosode from individual or collective samples. It is a blinded study; the presence of E. coli in gall bladder of rats is evaluated after 12-16 days of treatment: Untreated control, 100% of bacteria colonies (no spontaneous healing), second control is the vehicle (alcohol 5%) 94%, comparison group treated with Antibiotic (levokinolone) 33%*, treated group with nosode from a pool of urines (30D) 73%*, treated group with a self-nosode (30D) 39%*, and treated with a similar homeopathic remedy Phosphorus 30CH (the incorporation of rats in this group happens observing their individual behavior) 22%* (* Fisher test, p=0.05).

With such studies it is possible to evaluate some homeopathic parameters such as the criteria
for the choice of the best homeopathic dilution. The general rule is to use high potencies for
chronic / mental disturbances and low potencies for acute / organic disturbances. The antidepressive effect of Hypericum perforatum in rats was better in 200CH than in 30CH: tested by the Porsolt forced swimming method (Goulart et al. Avaliação dos efeitos de Hypericum perforatum (Hp) dinamizado homeopaticamente em comportamento de ratos. Anais do VIII SINAPIH, 20-22 May 2004: p.14. http//climed.epm.br/sinapih/index); this was a blinded, well designed study. Experimental animal studies have limited application to veterinary or to human homeopathy.

Veterinary studies minimize placebo effects and confirm the efficacy of homeopathic treatments. Experiments in laboratory animals help improving research design in homeopathy.

B/ Last, but not least, the human studies were considered.
B.1) A second G.I.R.I. working group was dedicated to clinical research, and particularly considered the issues of individuality and complexity.
Evidence Based Medicine (EBM) gives first priority to “Therapeutic Effects Testing” (TET), starting from the work of basic scientists in laboratories up to clinical researchers doing Randomized Clinical Trials (RCTs), and finally reviews or meta-analyses of several RCTs. The achieved level of TET determines the level of EBM for a medicinal product. “Clinical Use Testing” (CUT), starting with case reports, epidemiological outcomes and cost-benefit studies, is only interesting for public health authorities and patients but it is never sufficient to reach EBM. No real bridge exists between these two approaches.
Evidence Based Homeopathy (EBH) starts and ends with the individualized patient. It can be represented as the arch of homeopathy: at one side there is the examination of the patient, and at the other side the therapeutic instrument. In order to understand the patient, we must consider his totality in time and space to be able to understand his basic vulnerability, latent or manifest. This totality must be qualitatively modalized with chronological assessment to get the Minimal Syndrome of Maximal Value. The therapeutic instrument can be self-healing (no syndrome, no medication), or management of life-style or nutrition in order to avoid obstacles to cure. A homeopathic remedy can be considered after study of its physico-chemical characteristics, its toxicology, its usual therapeutic use: this is the first step, the hypothesis. The second step is the probability by a first “proving” (blinded protocol) on healthy volunteers; third is the confirmation by further “provings”; fourth is the corroboration by physio-pathological study; and last is the clinical verification in daily practice. For the remedies we must have the same qualitative assessment as for the patients. But the keystone of the whole homeopathic process, without which the arch will crumble, is the Law of Similars. Research in homeopathy must be concentrated on qualitative “proving” on healthy volunteers and clinical verification in daily practice. Therefore after many years of studies, our first priority must be systematic clinical files collection (CLIFICOL project). The Bayesian statistic, a statistical approach (likelihood ratio), can help establishing a scientific base for our symptoms’ repertories. This approach was presented by Dr Lex Rutten from The Netherlands.
Can one get over the gap that exists between EBM and EBH?

28

B.2) Dr Harald Walach, University of Freiburg, presented an overview of the already published papers.
Homeopathy is certainly popular (used by 50% of the population in France) and is historically successful, both individually (by Fieldmarshall Radetzky, Paganini, etc.) and generally (in cholera and other epidemics all over Europe). Homeopathy remained effective in the face of adversaries and is growing despite (or because of?) modern medical technology.

Looking only at the latest publications and using validated Quality of Life questionnaires (between 2000 and 2004), 6915 patients presented clinically significant improvement (approximately 70% of cases; more in children). Homeopathy reduced costs and allowed a better improvement in work-days lost compared with conventional practice. For specific diagnoses such as bronchial asthma (89% improvement; even better after 2 years), cancer patients in palliative care (improvement of quality of life, fatigue and anxiety but not pain), hyperactive children (after 3 months, 75% improvement versus 65% for conventional treatment), URTI (67.3% improvement with homeopathy, 56% with conventional treatment; side effects 7.8% homeopathy versus 22% conventional), homeopathy is at least as effective as conventional therapies, but costs are lower and the safety of homeopathy is greater.

On the other hand, an “efficacy paradox” can be acknowledged. Using the hierarchy of evidence, for conventional medicine the RCT is of the highest value – the best rigour and internal validity – but it has a low applicability score, a low external validity and its conclusions are generalized with great difficulty. On the contrary the applicability of case series is great, showing a high external validity and its conclusions generalized easily. RCT implicitly tests the placebo hypothesis; the question is only: “Is the homeopathic therapy different from placebo?” It presupposes a local-causal model of homeopathy, that the physical presence and “information” of a remedy is decisive (without considering the “receiver” health status), and that a “true” effect would be detectable through replication. It is apparent that discrepancies exist regarding homeopathy in daily practice and the RCT approach. Nevertheless RCTs have been performed and meta-analyses of these studies have concluded that there is clear evidence of efficacy in favour of homeopathic treatments that cannot be attributed only to a placebo effect (Linde K, Clausius N, Ramirez G, Melchart D, Eitel F, Hedges LV, Jonas WB. Lancet 1997; 350: 834-43 and Dean M.E. Hans Walz Preisschrift, Essen:KVC Verlag, 2004.) For some specific diagnoses, the same level of evidence has been reached: rheumatoid arthritis (6 studies); childhood diarrhoea (3 studies); postoperative ileus (8 studies); hayfever, asthma (4 studies). For migraine, results of RCTs are disappointing. In children, using comparison groups, significant results are obtained for recurrent infections, postoperative agitation, adenoids, otitis media, and stomatitis in patients with cancer (complication of the conventional treatment). There are promising pilots studies on low back pain, premenstrual syndrome and chronic fatigue.

The problems with RCTs are:

  • −  they are difficult to replicate (true also for conventional treatment: only 48% of all SSRI studiesare significant);
  • −  they are invasive and expensive, inducing lack of interest due to a lack of funding;
  • −  blinded RCTs answer only the placebo question;
  • −  they make unwarranted presuppositions. Conclusions: Clear indications exist about clinical effectiveness of
homeopathy; homeopathy is effective in uncontrolled practice or versus comparison groups; enough indications exist that “placebo” is an insufficient explanation for the effects of homeopathy. Homeopathy can be similar or better in effectiveness than conventional treatment and, where it has been studied, it is cheaper in the long run. Many interesting questions not even asked should be

29

prioritized, such as the potential of homeopathy to avoid invasive procedures in children and, in primary care settings, the
long-term effect of homeopathy in preventing chronic complications.

B.3) Future projects were discussed.
χ Surveys on homeopathic practice have already been published. Dr Galen Ives
(Priority Research, Sheffield) made some recommendations for future projects. Questionnaire design should be driven by requirements for data analysis, and professional advice sought before starting, in particular thinking carefully about measurement scales (subjective data not expressed in numbers but crossing a box), and assuming all respondents lack prior experience in such recording. The question of timescales is a sensitive one therefore it would be better to include only new patients. If the aim is to look at the daily practice, a large demographic data is needed. The question about why the patients chosen homeopathy must be addressed. A comparison group is not a common requirement in such studies, but to avoid editorial comments on this question, it would be explained in the discussion part. The aims of the study must be kept clearly in mind. Example: analysis of effectiveness versus conventional medicine (CM); cost-effectiveness versus CM. It would be recommended to use inclusion criteria (such as state of health) and sub-groups (as example acute cases). The study of patient’s satisfaction is not the same as looking at treatment efficiency. Efficiency can best be checked through Quality of Life studies, in this case at least 2 successive questionnaires are needed with a greater risk of drop out.
χ Dr Kivellos Spiros (Athens) introduced a severity scale that aims to embody
the laws of classical homeopathy in clinical study protocols. He proposed a classification of “level of health”, starting on level 1 (healthy) down to level 12 (irreversible internal injuries). The homeopathic prognosis can be estimated using such a scale and group classification has been elaborated.

some indications the efficacy of homeopathy has reached a high level of statistical significance.
• Futurestudiesareneededthatinvestigatethepreventiveeffectsofhomeopathyinchildren and chronic diseases. Funding of research into homeopathy must be considered as vital.

Finally, the participants wrote the following press release:

At the invitation of the European Committee for Homeopathy, which
represents 33 homeopathic doctors’ associations in 24 European countries, joining the XVIII symposium of GIRI, ten internationally renowned university professors in the field of research met in Brussels for a 3 day meeting starting on Friday November 12th 2004.
The results of the research discussed by these university professors are all inaccord with one another – namely, that there is clear evidence for the effectiveness of homeopathic medications. There is sufficient reason for further research.
The professors expressed their amazement at the lack of response from the
health authorities to these convincing results.

The simile principle – evidensbaserad forskning vid University of Leipzig

The simile principle

Poison as valuable medicine

Atropa (belladonna) contains atropine, a poison that produces – among other symptoms – very severe stomach cramps. It was therefore logical to use this poison for shortening the intestine of rats. But why use this poisonous Belladonna for treating cramps?

Samuel Hahnemann, the founder of homeopathy, discovered that any poison used in homeopathic potency can heal precisely those symptoms that it produces as a poison. If a patient has symptoms that are similar (Latin simile = similar) to those produced by a particular poison, this patient needs this poison in a homeopathic potency to regain health. Every substance contains a kind of footprint carrying information that is precisely the opposite of the substance’s own characteristics. And this material footprint is released by the homeopathic potency.

An example: A person with arsenic poisoning breaks out in a cold sweat has cold hands and feet, stomach cramps, anxiety, and then pathological anxiety. If someone has such symptoms without being poisoned, the homeopath knows that the use of arsenic (arsenicum album) can cure these symptoms.

For the experiment therefore, first the poison of the belladonna (atropine) was used to set off the cramps and then belladonna X90 to heal the cramps. The University of Leipzig has now proved that this is exactly how it functions, and that it cannot be explained by any placebo effect.

The homeopathic principle

Sensational study of University of Leipzig

Karen Nieber, a professor of pharmacology, merely wanted to prove that homeopathy doesn’t work. She argued that with potencies higher than X 23 not a single molecule of the original tincture could possibly be present, mathematically speaking, and that no pharmacological effect would be possible.

In the search for an experimental setup in which any possible placebo effect can be ruled out, she had a brilliant idea: she put a rat’s intestine in a fluid culture medium and used organic threads to fix it to a sensor so that she could measure any shortening of the intestine caused by cramps. Then she added a stimulant (atropine) to the fluid culture medium to produce severe cramps in the rat’s intestine. The intestine shrank and the scales showed a strong traction.

Why atropine and belladonna?

When she then added belladonna X 90 to the culture medium, the
intestine relaxed and the scales showed less traction. This proved that homeopathy is effective in the absence of any material substances – and in 2003 she won the € 10,000 Hans Heinrich Reckeweg award. Click here to read more about studies that confirm the efficacy of homoeopathic treatments.

  • läkemedlen får endast användas utvärtes eller tas in via munnen (oralt),

Se exempel vid Länkarna: WHO’s General Guidelines…..

Avogadros tal
